Did government work touch your files?
If any of your work was for a government contract, part of your archive may be off the table. Six questions show you which part, so you can set it aside and keep the rest.

How this works
Four steps, about as many minutes.
- Answer six yes or no questions about government work.
- See which parts of your archive are off the table.
- Get a short checklist for your contracts person.
- Keep your commercial work moving while you sort the rest.

Government work changes the rules for those files
Plenty of manufacturers and engineering firms do a mix of commercial and government work. The commercial side is usually yours to decide about. The government side often is not. Drawings for export-controlled parts, files marked as controlled unclassified information, and anything furnished by the government come with rules about who can see them, and those rules do not go away because a project ended years ago.
The good news is that this is usually a sorting job, not a dead end. Firms that keep government work in its own folders or vault can set that work aside and look at the commercial archive on its own.
What to do with a yes
Any yes here means one step first: find out which folders hold that work and separate it. Your contracts lead or the person who handles export compliance will usually know where it sits. Until it is separated, treat the whole archive as needing a check.
This is a checklist, not legal advice. Confirm anything flagged with your contracts lead or counsel before you go further.
Questions about this tool.
We did one government job ten years ago. Does that matter?
Only for the files from that job. If they are separated from the rest, the commercial archive can usually be looked at on its own.
What counts as export-controlled?
Parts and technical drawings covered by ITAR or the EAR. Your export compliance person or the contract itself will usually say. If you are not sure, treat it as controlled until you know.
What is CUI?
Controlled unclassified information. Government contracts mark it, and it comes with handling rules. Files with CUI or older FOUO markings stay out.
Is this legal advice?
No. It shows you what to separate and what to ask. Confirm anything flagged with your contracts lead or counsel.
