The company that pays for the workspace owns the content employees posted in it for work. That is what makes a license possible. Two things complicate it. Shared channels with clients or vendors carry their words too, and a client contract can restrict how those are used. And messages that are personal, about HR matters, or about health or pay get extra protection and are normally out of scope. Ask your lawyer about your state and your contracts; the answer is usually workable.
Why would a buyer want chat messages?
Because a chat archive is the record of how a company actually decided things: the question, the back-and-forth, the decision, and the link to the ticket or document it produced. Buyers of business data pay for that trail. The Spirit Airlines asset schedule listed about 500 million Microsoft Teams items alongside 100 million emails, and that archive drew a $10 million winning bid from Google (ComplexDiscovery, Business Insider). A 40-person company's Slack is the same kind of record at a smaller scale.
Chat is worth more when threads are intact and when it links to other systems: a bug discussed in a channel that became a pull request, a customer issue that became a ticket. Your Slack history, system by system and your Teams history.

Names and identities of customers, contacts and employees. Direct messages, unless the agreement specifically covers them. HR, medical, pay and disciplinary matters. Anything covered by a client contract that restricts secondary use. Credentials and secrets pasted into channels. The exact process depends on the buyer and is written into the agreement you approve; you see every term before you agree to anything. What de-identification means, and what to ask for.
What does the Spirit Airlines case show?
Three things. First, that a chat and email archive has a market price: competing bids for Spirit's records ran from $7.5 million to $12.5 million around Google's $10 million win (chapter11cases). Second, that ownership gets tested: a vendor, Springshot, objected that some of the records were its own, which is the shared-channel problem at airline scale. Third, that employee records are the sensitive part. On October 8, 2026, 121 members of Congress asked Google and Spirit to keep worker information out of the sale and to agree a de-identification method with the affected workers, and the hearing moved to November 6 (ComplexDiscovery, Travel Weekly). A solvent company can set those terms up front; a bankrupt one cannot. The full explainer.
How do I export Slack or Teams before it is gone?
Slack: on the free plan only the last 90 days of messages are visible, so a downgrade hides years of history before anyone notices. Export from a paid plan (workspace settings, Import and export) while you still have one; the standard export covers public channels, and private channels and DMs need the higher-tier export. Teams: Microsoft 365 keeps a cancelled subscription's data for up to 90 days, then deletes it (Microsoft 365 cancellation guide). Use the compliance export or a content search to pull channel messages with attachments before cancelling.
In short
- A company can usually license its own Slack or Teams history. The workspace owner owns the work content.
- Identities, HR and pay matters, DMs and client-restricted channels come out before a buyer sees anything.
- The Spirit Airlines archive (about 500 million Teams items) drew a $10 million winning bid, a vendor ownership objection, and a letter from 121 lawmakers about employee records.
- Export before downgrading or cancelling: free Slack hides history past 90 days; cancelled Microsoft 365 data is deleted after up to 90 days.
Questions owners ask.
Can I license Slack DMs?
Usually not by default. Direct messages are normally out of scope unless the agreement specifically covers them and the people involved are protected.
What about Slack Connect channels with clients?
Those carry the client's words. If the client contract restricts secondary use, that channel stays out. The rest of the workspace can still be licensed.
Do employees have to agree?
Work messages in a company workspace belong to the company, but employee identities and sensitive matters are removed, and the Spirit case shows regulators care about this. Ask your lawyer about your state.
We downgraded Slack to free years ago. Is the history gone?
Hidden, not necessarily gone. Upgrading restores visibility of older messages on most workspaces. Check before you assume it is lost.
