Your team should hear it from you

There have been news stories about companies licensing their staff's messages without telling anyone. That is exactly the wrong way to do it, and it is why people get nervous when they hear the idea secondhand. When the owner explains it first, in plain words, most teams have two questions: is my private stuff in it, and does this change my job. The honest answers are no, and no.

This writer puts those answers in a short note. It says what is happening, what is never included, how names and personal messages are handled, and who to ask. It does not use any jargon, and it is written to be sent by you, in your name.

When to send it

Before anything is shared, and ideally before the first serious conversation with a buyer. If anyone on the team has a concern, you want to hear it while there is still time to act on it.

Make it yours

The note is a starting point. Change the wording to sound like you, and add anything specific to your company.

Questions about this tool.

Do I have to tell my team?

We think you should, before anything is shared. It is the right thing to do, and a team that hears it from you is far less likely to worry.

Will my staff's names be in the records?

They should not be. Agreements for licensing company records normally require names and personal details to be removed. Put that in writing in your agreement.

What about personal messages?

Personal and private messages should be left out. The note says so, and your agreement should too.

Can I edit the note?

Yes. Copy it and change anything you like before you send it.
