How to sell your company's Slack data (and who buys it)

Short answer: you license a de-identified copy of your Slack history to a buyer, and you keep your workspace. Scale, Mode, Polyshares and Grepped all name Slack in what they buy. Years of history in the same workspace are worth the most, and on Slack's free plan messages older than a year are deleted (Slack), so check your plan first. Why buyers want Slack

Slack is where the real work shows up: a customer emails in, the team talks it through, someone makes the call. AI companies pay for that trail because it shows how people actually do their jobs.

How it works

  1. Check you own it. Shared channels with clients and client-owned data may be left out.
  2. Get an estimate and compare buyers.
  3. Agree the scope: which channels, which years, what's excluded.
  4. Your admin approves an export, the buyer or its partner de-identifies it, and you get paid.

What gets removed

Names, emails, phone numbers and account numbers are swapped out before any AI company sees the data, and the swap is consistent, so "Tony" becomes "Employee 6" everywhere. Don't try to clean it yourself first. Deleting things by hand usually breaks the story the buyer is paying for. What de-identification means.

Switching apps? Read this first

Export your full Slack history before you cancel or downgrade. Once a paid workspace drops to free, older history can disappear, and it might be worth more than the subscription you're saving. What Slack history is worth.

In short

  • You license a de-identified copy. You keep your workspace.
  • Scale, Mode, Polyshares and Grepped all name Slack in what they buy.
  • Years in the same workspace and a remote team are worth the most.
  • Export before you switch apps or drop to the free plan.

Questions owners ask.

Can I sell my company's Slack messages?

You can license a de-identified copy if your company owns the workspace and the content. Client-owned data and shared channels may be excluded.

Do buyers see employees' names?

No. Names and contact details are swapped for consistent placeholders before any AI company sees the data.

Is Slack data worth anything on the free plan?

Less. Slack deletes messages and files older than one year on free workspaces, so the history buyers pay for may already be gone.
