Can you sell your company's old emails? How email archives get licensed

Short answer: yes, you can license a de-identified copy of your company's email to AI companies, and you keep the originals. The biggest public example is Spirit Airlines: Google bid $10 million for records including about 100 million emails (chapter11cases). Buyers including Scale, Mode, Polyshares and Grepped name email in what they buy. See what your email history could be worth.

Who buys email

Email alone is worth less than email with the chat, files and CRM records that go with it, because buyers pay for the whole trail.

What about customer emails?

Names, addresses, phone numbers and account numbers are removed or swapped before an AI company sees anything, and some records are left out entirely. In the Spirit sale, passenger records were excluded. Data you hold for your own clients is usually excluded too (Polyshares says so on its page). Will my customers' information be exposed?

Keep old mailboxes

Before you delete a former employee's account, check what goes with it. Years of email from people who left are part of the history buyers pay for. If you're shutting down, buyers pay the most while the accounts are still live. Closing a company?

How it works

  1. Get an estimate and compare buyers.
  2. Agree which mailboxes and years are in, and what's excluded.
  3. Your admin approves the export, the buyer de-identifies it, you get paid.

Questions owners ask.

Is it legal to sell company emails?
